Archaeology and Cottonopolis: Salford University
Dr.Mike Nevell, Head of Archaeology at Salford University, is very keen to support the Cottonopolis active learning project. He has suggested two totally different projects that netowrk members can take part in, and which will actively further the work of his department. One is creating 'mill biographies' for sites in Greater Manchester. The other is identifying existing examples of back-to-back houses, once so common in the area, but which have swiftly disappeared.
"Adopt-a-Mill"
Thanks go to Mark Child of Salford U3A for the catchy title, and idea, for the Mills Biographies project. It encapsulates the principle that lots of people chipping in can make a difference to serious research data.
The idea of slogging through scores of mills' backgrounds might be daunting......but lots of members will enjoy looking into 'just that one'.
The one that was down your road, or that you got told off for playing in when it was derelict.
The one where a relative worked, or the one that's been made into new apartments.
If you would like to have an individual go at recording a mill, please contact Maggy
